Even back in 1978 there were Star Wars 12 inch scale figures as 10 were released initially; Darth Vader, Luke Skywalker, Princess Leia, Han Solo, Chewbacca, Obi Wan Kenobi, Stormtrooper, C-3PO, R2-D2 and a Jawa. When The Empire Strikes Back was released Boba Fett and IG-88 were released but these were the last 2 figures as Han Solo in Hoth Outfit, Lando Calrissian, Leia in Bespin Gown, Luke in Fatigues and others went unreleased.
In 1995 The Power of the Force resurrected Star Wars figures and the 12 inch figures weren’t far behind. Collectors this time were somewhat disappointed that the figures were all 12 inches tall rather than scaled, meaning Chewbacca and Darth Vader were the same height as Luke, Han and the others. New taller versions of the two were later released to bring the line into scale.
In 2004 Sideshow Collectables took over the Star Wars 12 inch line, as The Sixth Scale (12 inch scale is 12 inches/1 foot per 6 feet, making it 1:6 or one sixth). These figures were more detailed than Hasbro’s offerings and according were released at a higher price point.
In 2015, in addition to Sideshow Collectables, Hot Toys begun producing 1:6 scale Star Wars figures which were even more detailed and of higher quality. While 12 inch figures didn’t catch on in the 70’s and 80’s now they are the figure of choice for the collector with deep pockets.
