Masters of the Universe (MOTU) was created by Mattel and launched in 1982 as a cartoon and toy line. The story followed Prince Adam of Eternia who possessed a power sword that would magically transform him into He-Man, so that he could defend Eternia from the evil Skeletor and his henchmen.
He-Man was an immediate hit thanks to its combination of sword and sorcery with futuristic technology that inspired bizarre and imaginative characters. While the original Masters of the Universe toys came to an end in 1988, in 2000 commemorative editions of the figures were reissued and in 2002 a line of new figures were released which were far more realistic than the originals. In 2007, Mattel begun Masters of the Universe Classics, a range of toys that stood at 7 inches and also featured more articulation and detail than previous releases. In 2017, Super7 begun production of their own updated figures.
