Toy Fair 2017: Everything You Need to Know in Brief

On the weekend all the major toy companies unveiled their upcoming plans at Toy Fair 2017, Gear4Geeks looks at all of them!

As you’d expect, Toy Fair 2017 saw a huge number of new toys and toy lines being announced so here’s a quick run down.

Mattel

Mattel unveiled a lot of DC product, most of which centres around the Justice League which isn’t a surprise as there’s a Justice League film on the way. What is odd is that the figures are all comic versions rather than movie versions. On the movie front there were a number of Wonder Woman movie figures on show.

The Mega Construx line will be adding some more Halo sets and Destiny will also be getting some sets.

Also coming from Mattel are more Halo figures in both the 6″ and 12″ scales.

Bandai

Two words – Power Rangers. Lots and lots and lots of Power Rangers.

New Dragonball Z figures are coming which will be the same size as Marvel Legends figures and look to be copying the Build-A-Figure idea.

SH Figuarts will be releasing more Godzilla monster figures and the Undertaker and Kane WWE figures were shown for the first time.

NECA

Aliens series 11 was on show which consists of a blue glowing Xenomorph inspired by the Kenner figures from years ago and a Xenomorph inspired by Dark Horse Comics. The series rounds out with a Joan Lambert figure from the first Alien film which features a licensed head sculpt! Also on show were a Hicks and Hudson 2 pack along with a host of other Aliens and Predators and figures from the new Alien: Covenant movie.

There was also an odd Batman v Joker Alien set on display featuring a bleach white Xenomorph with bright green and red parts.

New figures for Evil Dead, Nightmare on Elm Street, Child’s Play, Preacher, Godzilla, Terminator, Texas Chainsaw Massacre and more were on show from NECA’s horror range.

Team Fortress, Heroes of the Storm and Rocky figures were being shown as were new 1:4 scale figures like Dr Strange, Daredevil, Iron Man, Captain America, Catwoman and Mayor Penguin from Batman Returns and the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Life size foam figures including Batman, Harley Quinn, Spider-Man, Slimer, Deadpool and an Alien egg were on display.

Hasbro

Hasbro were always going to be the biggest draw at Toy Fair 2017 and they didn’t disappoint. New GI Joe Loyal Subjects figures from series 2 were on show featuring Tiger Force, Python Patrol and others. Various other Loyal Subject lines were represented including My Little Pony, Aliens, Masters of the Universe, Street Fighter, Thundercats, Mega Man and TMNT.

Star Wars was big news as Hasbro unveiled new 3.75″ exclusive figures of Ponda Baba, Tusken Raider, Sandtrooper and the prototype version of Boba Fett. However the exciting reveal was the new 40th anniversary 6 inch figures which will be on vintage style cards! The first 12 Star Wars characters that were released in 1977 will be released in this format along with a Luke in X-Wing pilot gear and am exclusive deluxe Darth Vader figure.

In the Marvel Legends series the just released Guardians of the Galaxy figures were alongside upcoming Spider-Man: Homecoming figures, Classic Spider-Man and Vulture 2 pack, a Spider-Man and Mary Jane 2 pack and a wave of Netflix series figures – Daredevil, Elektra, Punisher and Jessica Jones. 4 inch figures from Spider-Man: Homecoming and other Spider-Man related figures were also revealed.

In the Transformers franchise the big news was the massive Trypticon Titan Class figure but also revealed were new RID, Titans Return, Movie Masterpiece figures and new figures from Transformers: The Last Knight.

Diamond Select

Minimates and Vinimates from The Iron Giant, Watchmen, Batman, Wonder Woman, The Flash, TMNT, Back to the Future, Pirates of the Caribbean, Elf, Caddyshack, Beetlejuice, Forbidden Planet and Predator were being hyped.

Nightmare Before Christmas and new Muppets figures were shown featuring Ms Piggy, Rolph, Sam the Eagle, Swedish Chef, Janice and Floyd Pepper.

Lots of DC busts and Animated statues were on display but photos weren’t allowed of all of the range.

New Marvel Select figures were shown including Lady Deadpool, Netflix Daredevil, Spider-Gwen, Spider-Man from Homecoming and Star-Lord.

Minimates from Guardians of the Galaxy, Wolverine comics and Spider-Man: Homecoming were unveiled.

PVC statues of the Guardians of the Galaxy, Spider-Man: Homecoming, Old Man Logan, the Netflix characters and more were on display.

Ghostbuster Select figures from Ghostbusters 2 were shown which come with pieces to form the doors of the firehouse.

Big Chief Studios

1/6 scale replica figures from Captain Scarlet and Thunderbirds were on display which looked seriously impressive!

McFarlane Toys

In addition to the Destiny figures that we reported last week, McFarlane had figures from Naruto, The Walking Dead (3 different Negans!), Gears of War 4, Borderlands 2, Titanfall 2, Mass Effect Andromeda, Labyrinth, Spawn, Attack on Titan, One Punch Man and Tokyo Ghoul on show.

In their building sets range, new sets from South Park, Rick and Morty, Steven Universe and Five Nighst at Freddy’s were displayed.

Playmates

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles were the big thing here with figures being re-released, new WWE tie in figures and a lot more being shown.

New Voltron figures were revealed in various scales.

Super 7

Super 7 brought it big time at Toy Fair 2017 with a massive reveal of their new Masters of the Universe figures which are absolutely fantastic. With the Mattel Classics series skyrocketing in price it’s nice to see affordable options becoming available soon. They also revealed new MUSCLE figures which will include other toy licenses like Mega Man, Masters of the Universe and Alien.

Lego

Lego had a huge number of items on display at Toy Fair 2017 mixing already available and upcoming releases like from the Star Wars range the Jakku Quadjumper, Rathtar Escape, The Arrowhead and the large Scout Trooper and Speeder Bike set.

Moana and Frozen sets were shown as were Classic Lego sets, Elves, Nexo Knights, new Technic sets, Guardians of the Galaxy 2, Spider-Man: Homecoming, Adventure Time sets, tons of new City sets and a Pirates of the Caribbean pirate ship!

DC Collectibles

DC announced they had cancelled their own movie related figures as they were affecting sales of licensed figures. On show here were Batman Animated figures, Ant Lucia Designer Figures, DC TV figures such as John Constantine and a Batcave playset.

Mezco

Unveiling their new 1:12 range of figures, Mezco showed off Ghostbusters, DC, Marvel, Star Trek and more along with their usual horror themed Living Dead Dolls, horror movie figures and large scale Mumm-Ra and Lion-O.

Funko

Despite the massive success of their Pop Vinyl figures, Funko are not resting and seem determined to carve out their place in the toy market. Toy Fair 2017 was arguably their biggest yet – 1966 Batman figures with a Batmobile were one highlight from a lot of reveals which included Son of Zorn, Suicide Squad and Game of Thrones figures.

Funko Pops weren’t ignored though, nor were Dorbz or Rock Candy with reveals of classic Batman villains, Wonder Woman movie characters, Twin Peaks, Harry Potter, Power Rangers, Lord of the Rings, Nikelodeon (including Rugrats), Troll Hunters, Westworld, Despicable Me 3, Stranger Things, Mass Effect, various Disney characters, Looney Tunes, Rick and Morty, Ghost in the Shell, Guardians of the Galaxy 2 and a few others.

The Re:Action range introduced Shogun Warriors, Masters of the Universe, Robotech, Street Fighter, Planet of the Apes, Hellboy and The Worst.

Good Smile Company

There weren’t many Figma figures on display here, it was mainly a large number of Nendroid figures from Overwatch, Frozen, Batman v Superman, Naruto and other anime series.

QMX

Alongside their already impressive 1:12 Star Trek figures, QMX showed off figures from Supernatural, Firefly and the Princess Bride.

X-Plus

Awesome 12″ Godzilla figures! That pretty much sums it up.

Square Enix

Another company who brought their A game at Toy Fair 2017 with prototypes of incredible Magneto and Scarecrow figures along with Harley Quinn and others.

Storm Collectibles

On show were their 6″ Mortal Kombat and Street Fighter figures which are very impressive along with 1:6 scale figures of Muhammad Ali, Hulk Hogan and Mike Tyson.
