Transformers Titans Return Nightbeat is one of the four figures that makes up wave 1 of the Titan Masters.
The Transformers range Titans Return has seen the 1987 concept of Headmasters reintroduced but this time as Titan Masters and today’s review is another of the updated characters from 1988 – Nightbeat. Originally Nightbeat was one of the smaller Autobot Headmasters, known in Japan as Headmaster Juniors along with Siren and Hosehead but in Titans Return he doesn’t even get a body, only a head.
As with the other Titan Master class of figures Nightbeat can combine with his vehicle or he can ride it as a passenger. The default mode of the vehicle is a drill tank which is a fairly good toy, but the other mode, a jet mode is fairly lacking.
The vehicle follows the standard Titan Master regime of turn the vehicle over and flip out the wings which is about as much as you could hope for with a simple and small vehicle like this. The vehicles are simply bonuses for adult collectors anyway who are buying these sets for the head and the Titans Return Nightbeat is no different.
Most Titan Masters have the same face as the head they turn into but Nightbeat has a far different face on the smaller robot, one that looks a little on the menacing side and more appropriate for Horri-Bull/Terri-Bull or Apeface.
However the head mode is undeniably Nightbeat and leans more towards the IDW comics representation of the character. As with the other Titan Masters, the vehicle becomes a ridiculous looking gun which is totally unnecessary. What’s interesting is that by buying a Generations Nightbeat, you can remove the head and with a little modifying can create a proper Headmaster version of the character so all is not lost for Nightbeat fans who want him to have a body.
Overall it’s a great playable figure for children but for adult collectors there’s not much on offer here other than a head. It’s odd that Hasbro chose a very expressive looking face for Nightbeat which I’m sure some fans won’t appreciate but as a figure it’s pretty solid.
